Any guesses on how many software engineers / developers are there in the world in each of the following areas?

Reply:Any number would have to be a guess, and the question is somewhat more complicated by the fact that most programmers know more than one programming language and would end up being counted multiple times.





A more focused question might get you a better answer, however. If you want to know how many computer programmers there are in the U.S., there are some definitive answers (but probably not accurate, either). This site (gettech.org) had a statistic for 2002, but it is no longer listed on their site. Their quote: "There were 498579 Computer Programmers in 2002". I'm guessing that they are only counting in the US, and probably got their number from the IRS, which would only count people that listed computer programmer as their job title on their tax return.





If you are only interested in the *relative* popularity of various programming languages, you can check this site: www.triobe.com (see link below). They use a non-scientific method to determine popularity based upon languages mentioned in recruitment ads at various job posting sites.
