I am currently learning asp.net %26amp; C# to become an asp.net developer.
Is 46 too late? Will I be still employable? In some yahoo programming rooms so are pushing me to give up other are claiming that I should persue.

Reply:I waited till i was 30. If you like it, go after it, but you'll have to do it with gusto cause there's an ever expanding field of things you gotta know. If you want to be a professional programmer, Java seems the way to go.
Reply:If it is your interest and you are picking it up quickly then I would pursue it. If you are doing it because you think it is a good skill to get then, you might want to rethink it.
Check your local paper and see in the IT sections what skills your local employers are looking for and make sure you are training for the demand. Might want to add some Linux on the resume as well. Also, study some networking courses. Lots of professional Web geeks out there. Make sure there is a demand within your commuting distance for the skills you are learning. Good luck.

What are some new/popular web technologies worth learning?
I'm a ASP.NET/C# and JavaScript/Ajax developer, who actively uses SQL server, mysql, oracle, etc. I occasionally use PHP and ColdFusion.
I want to get into Adobe Flex and possibly Silverlight, but am not sure how popular these technologies are at the moment and/or if it's even worth learning these if companies aren't hiring architects implementing these technologies. Also, what about Ruby-on-Rails?
So, for someone who does what I do, is learning Flex or Silverlight worth it, or are there other technologies out there that someone in my field should start learning (e.g., companies will pay for guys with those skillsets).

I am installing Visual Studio 2008 and I don't know what to install?
Last time I installed Visual Studio 2008 I had a bunch of junk that I didn't need. I really don't think I need the SQL server and the crystal reports basic for visual studio 2008.

The language tools just allow you to program in the language that is specified. You need to install at least 1 language tool if you're installing Visual Studio. Since they all use the same interface, you should probably enable all of them (it doesn't add much to the hard drive requirement, and they are all part of the same program anyway so each one won't be added to your start menu either).
Dotfuscator enhances the efficiency of your programs, and also resolves dependencies on architectures... Essentially not necessary unless you're really going for top knotch performance. Since you don't seem to be experienced, you probably don't need this.
The tools for redistributing applications are only necessary if you plan on making programs that will use advanced features. These advanced features may require separate software to be installed. Since they may not have that separate software, you can package your installer with the redistributable software so that when they install your program, they can install the other software with it. Again, since you you don't seem all that experienced with it, this is probably not necessary for you.
Unit Testing Tools are just that. Testing Tools. Unless you know how to use them, you shouldn't install this. Though if you're taking a class your instructor may want you to have them installed.
SQL Server is a database. Yet again, this is for more advanced users. You probably won't need it. If you do end up needing it later on down the road, you can always install it separately.

Seeing as land is so expensive, why don't builders dig down and add basements to new build houses in the uk. Is it becuase a) its too expensive, b) the only land left is poisonous landfill and/or floodplain, c) plain greed on the developers part?

Generally, a basement is done during construction for 1 of 2 reasons. The primary reason is that a foundation must get solid non-moving ground to sit on or the house will heave, crack, tilt and generally move around and fall apart over the years. In areas where frost gets in the ground and the ground freezes; you must dig deeper than the frost. Older houses used to go the minimum. The standards evolved over the years to dig deeper and thus make the basement more usable space. It is very costly to dig, form and finish a sub-grade foundation and if the purchasers accept a slab or a 4 foot crawlspace, that will remain the standard in your market for a "stable footing". If you spoke to your builder prior to construction and your purchase, you might get them to dig you out a foundation as an optional extra to your house. It will cost more but thus the second reason for a basement if the environment doesn't need it: a luxury at a cost. Land is finite. A progressive builder/developer should look at all methods to maximize the use of the land at hand when planning a build. If a group of folks approached a builder for the same option; the price may reduce somewhat if the builder could accomodate you and also make a profit on the option.

If you have a good phone voice, live in the US (a few states are excluded), have a good computer, DSL, a hard wired phone, good customer service skills, you might be interested in checking out Alpine Access. They hire people to telecommmute, you get paid an hourly wage, checks are mailed bi-weekly... BUT it's just a JOB... don't expect to get rich. Just expect that if you qualify and can guarantee a quite work enviroment, you'll get paid an hourly wage working from home anywhere from $8-$10 an hour.

To create beautiful colour that has depth and sparkle you need to make sure that you include the reds and golds. I call this a colour suite because it is all inclusive and it is comprehensive.

My clients absolutely love this and I would never approach colour without combining all three of these together. The reason behind my "madness" is so easy once you understand the why.
To create beautiful colour that has depth and sparkle you need to make sure that you include the reds and golds. I call this a colour suite because it is all inclusive and it is comprehensive.
Red tones add depth to any colour below a level 8. It makes sure there is warmth with richness and it is alive with colour play. Medium browns to dark brown benefit mostly from this application and I absolutely love it.

The whole .NET framework is derived from J2EE. Microsoft copied and pasted the terms and technologies from Sun into it's .NET framework.
C# is similar to Java. And they are both derived from the C++ language. They are a little bit different at some point in syntax and declaration (i.e.; inheritance and pointers).
C# is part of the .NET framework, which has lots of security issues and vulnerabilities. But as a coding language, it's fine.
If you are willing to developer small or intermediate web applications, use the C# with ASP.NET. If you are targeting large and power-full web applications, go for the J2EE with Java.
There is another powerful feature in Java! it's well integrated with the Oracle database.
When it comes to networking, Java has very power-full "packages" that ease up the connection and network related issues.
You can't really ask "who's the best?" rather, you should ask what is best for developing certain web applications?
If you are a .NET developer,it is very very easy to upgrade yourself to J2EE, since Microsoft developed its .NET based on J2EE.

(The book begins with a discussion of what needs to be standardized and what doesn't.) PKMN G/S/C: Will I Get Certificate Without Mew/Celebi?
After years of isolation, I finally rekindled with my Game Boy, but in a retrospective way. I had three PKMN cartridges: the Yellow Version, the Gold Version, and the Crystal Version. i then shockingly realized that I can really "catch'em all" and get the 250 PKMN! (Unobtainables can be caught/gotten in other versions, breeding/duplicating (from Gold) and sacrifices (like restarting the game after trading Kabuto away, so I can get the Omanyte) enabled me to.) So I went on to buy another cheap GBC for like, 9 bucks, and a Game Link Cable for 6. Not too shabby. Hopefully, with the Mew glitch (http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/M... and the bunch of Celebi myths (http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Can_you_get_a_... I would be able to get them all. But what if I don't? Did anyone get the realistic total of 249 PKMN (in Gold/Crystal) and still get the certificate/diploma from the Game Freak developers in the Celadon City place?

I am C# developer and want to export data from a tps file to a flat file. I found topscan to export the data but one of the columns(fields) in a file seems to be an array/dimension.

Unfortunately after 2 years on the job you get laid off by the company %26amp; you are looking for a new position in the same Java field - but your placement agency force you to ignore Java and ask you to concentrate on Networks, because they secretly know that Networks jobs have higher salary than Java jobs (so that they can make more money). But you have whatsoever no background or experience in Networks %26amp; the agency provide mediocre training and they don't pay you while you are without a job or even on training (your money is draining from your savings). What will you do in this situation?

I'm thinking, due to A) more awareness of sustainable living, B) more environmental demands placed on big business', and C) Political motivation

Lawyers are the Luddites of a prosperous society.
It's the environmental (flat-earth) lawyers that are preventing us from making more significant progress on elimination of carbon based fuel sources.
They prevent the development of non-carbon based power generation (nuclear, wind, hydro-electric, etc.). Every time that a new large capacity energy production site is proposed, some lawyer brings it to a halt because of 'environmental' concerns.

There will be no flash involved.
I will be using C# and .Net latest softwares.
I will be doing the Web Design, Web Development and a complex customized Admin system.
I think the total hours for this project will be at least 500 hours.
How many hours would you think something like this would take?
How much do you think I should charge him? This is the first real big company that has interested in my freelance work and I don't to be too cheap, but I don't want to be too expensive.
What do you think would be a fair market price I should charge?

Developers what compiler do you use?
I use c++ builder myself I have found it to be hands down the most verstile tool out there. I used to use VB it is quick but not as powerful as C/C++. I took a opengl class it use VC++ but even then I did my homework on my C++ Builder than just overted the code to VC++ in class before turning in my assignment. There are Arugment for and againt all the tool out there. There are even some striaght Assembly programmers out there. I am just courious to know What to do you and why

Knowing certain popular programming languages (Java, C++ etc) is only a very small part of being an excellent software developer. They will allow you to get jobs that require use languages. But to be good at this field, you have to know about things like design pattern, software architecture, object oriented programming, design workflow, requirement specification, UML, documentation, user interface. Software engineering is a discipline that encompasses not only coding, but also ways to develop functional software with the least amount of time (not to mention code maintainence). Coders simply get outsourced, software engineer, however, should know how to design things properly. If you don't have programming background then yes, learn a language. I'd suggest Java or C++ and have a good understanding of object oriented programming. Once you know those two the rest is pretty easy to pick up.

Reply:I have been a developer for 15 years. If you want to be an excellent software developer, I would recommend that you learn SQL (for database queries), C#, and Flash (for graphical web development). These are all very marketable skills, and will take you a long way.

Reply:U think C is all enough. u are childhish. u must be a fresher. I'll recommend u might go to any renowned Computer institutions or if u think your B.E or B.Tech is enough, then wait.
Reply:You should learn C in depth, even though you may not get to use it much unless you get into device drivers and OS kernals. It takes you close to the metal - you will learn exactly what makes good code and bad because of that.
C++ is based on C, has the same syntax and capabilities, and generates identical code when writing C-like code. It has a wider range of features (namepsace, objects and so on) and applications. If C++ is on your list anyway, then it is enough to become merely competent in C.
Also learn at least 3 or 4 other languages. Preferably, each should be different from the others. Example- Java, SQL, C++, PHP. Get really good at two of them.
Don't forget the systems and build environments you might use them with. You don't "write code", your develop applications, libraries and tools for specific systems using particular platforms and development software. Omitting any of that knowledge leaves you somewhat crippled.
Also, if you have a particular field in mind (such as GIS, CAD, medical, business or gaming), pick up some domain skills. That is, if you want to do GIS, take a course or two in GIS and cartography. Few things help as much as knowing what it is you are are doing. Stringing lines of code together is one thing, stringing them together - with purpose and understanding - is another.
Make sure your math skills are wide ranging and strong. You rarely will need much beyond high school math (really), but it helps. Most of what you will do is architectural, not mathematical. But once you have to grind some numbers, you had better know the complete ins and outs or your will end up writing code slower and buggier than anything MS ever produced.

1. Have a good understanding of atleast one major language, like C/C++/Java
2. Have a good grounding on Object Oriented concepts
3. Learn a couple of scripting languages like Shell/Perl/Python
4. Know the associated tools of the trade like Makefile, Configuration Management etc.
But having said this, the above are necessary but not sufficient to become a good software developer.
Software is mostly a helper discipline for other domains like Mechanical, Electrical etc except for some core areas like OS, Networking etc. Hence if one is able to understand the problem domain that one is trying to solve, and evolve a good software solution to the problem with quality and within time, then that person is a good software developer.
Reply:Get a college degree in Computer Science or Software Engineer. You need to understand algorithms, data structures, software design, data design, numerical methods, statistics, networking protocols, cryptography, etc. You won't learn any of that stuff from a C++ book.

Reply:I have been a developer for 15 years. If you want to be an excellent software developer, I would recommend that you learn SQL (for database queries), C#, and Flash (for graphical web development). These are all very marketable skills, and will take you a long way.

Reply:You should learn C in depth, even though you may not get to use it much unless you get into device drivers and OS kernals. It takes you close to the metal - you will learn exactly what makes good code and bad because of that.
C++ is based on C, has the same syntax and capabilities, and generates identical code when writing C-like code. It has a wider range of features (namepsace, objects and so on) and applications. If C++ is on your list anyway, then it is enough to become merely competent in C.
Also learn at least 3 or 4 other languages. Preferably, each should be different from the others. Example- Java, SQL, C++, PHP. Get really good at two of them.
Don't forget the systems and build environments you might use them with. You don't "write code", your develop applications, libraries and tools for specific systems using particular platforms and development software. Omitting any of that knowledge leaves you somewhat crippled.
Also, if you have a particular field in mind (such as GIS, CAD, medical, business or gaming), pick up some domain skills. That is, if you want to do GIS, take a course or two in GIS and cartography. Few things help as much as knowing what it is you are are doing. Stringing lines of code together is one thing, stringing them together - with purpose and understanding - is another.
Make sure your math skills are wide ranging and strong. You rarely will need much beyond high school math (really), but it helps. Most of what you will do is architectural, not mathematical. But once you have to grind some numbers, you had better know the complete ins and outs or your will end up writing code slower and buggier than anything MS ever produced.

Reply:The answer is embedded in your question. IMHO to be a good software programmer, one must
1. Have a good understanding of atleast one major language, like C/C++/Java
2. Have a good grounding on Object Oriented concepts
3. Learn a couple of scripting languages like Shell/Perl/Python
4. Know the associated tools of the trade like Makefile, Configuration Management etc.
But having said this, the above are necessary but not sufficient to become a good software developer.
Software is mostly a helper discipline for other domains like Mechanical, Electrical etc except for some core areas like OS, Networking etc. Hence if one is able to understand the problem domain that one is trying to solve, and evolve a good software solution to the problem with quality and within time, then that person is a good software developer.
Reply:Get a college degree in Computer Science or Software Engineer. You need to understand algorithms, data structures, software design, data design, numerical methods, statistics, networking protocols, cryptography, etc. You won't learn any of that stuff from a C++ book.

first decide in which field , my mean, whether in networking programming or system programming or database programming or site developer. its upon you, what you decide learn in that field. bt c and c++ are basic language of all. so its good to have a rigid base.
